What if the Fires Are a Distraction?

One of the hardest parts about pulling up is realizing that the thing that made you successful may eventually get in your way. Funny enough some of the most impactful lessons I learned came from the simplest sentences shared by mentors and colleagues. Once, unprovoked, someone said to me “You’re at a high enough level now that when the end of the day comes, you may never feel like you did any actual work.” And like most big lessons, it took me a while to figure out what that really meant.


You are conditioned to associate value with visible output. Fast movement. Solving problems in real time. Exhaustion disguised as importance. The problem is that eventually you start confusing motion with progress. You chase fires because fires make you feel useful. Reacting feels productive because it creates immediate proof that you are contributing. It gives you something tangible to point at.


But what if the fires are the distraction?


Humans crave distraction. Comfort. Urgency. Entertainment disguised as progress. Work is no different. The rush of solving problems can become its own reward. Before long, your identity is tied to being the person who saves the day instead of the person who built a system that no longer needs saving.


The harder discipline is slowing the fuck down.


Long enough to think clearly. To recalibrate. Long enough to write strategy instead of improvising your way through momentum.
Real growth starts when you decide how your organization should move before movement is required. Define the pillars that check your decisions. Create a framework that forces you to interact with strategy every day. Build something your team can point to when making decisions without you in the room.


And the fires? Of course they are still there. There is never any escaping them.

The difference is you stop turning them into identity and start treating them as tasks.
That shift changes everything.


You begin to recognize patterns inside the chaos. What once felt random becomes data the demonstrates the health of all your levers.


That pause to establish clarity will absolutely feel painful, especially in a world addicted to speed. Think about every time you try to quit sugar. But the truth behind operating any other way is brutal. It is why people get stuck. Why you chase every new idea. Why energy stays depleted. Why teams drift. Why decisions lose consistency.


What feels like an absence of movement at first is often the beginning of real momentum. Strategy is not the work that happens after growth. Strategy is what makes sustainable growth possible.
